Refrigerator Service Maintenance Tips
Checking the door seals.
A loose seal will allow cool air to seep out, which wastes energy and cause your fridge to work twice as hard as it should, meaning more wear and tear on the components. First, check to see if the seals are free of food particles. Try cleaning them out twice a year using a toothbrush and a mixture of water and baking soda. Then try the dollar-bill test, meaning, close the bill in the door so half of it is in and the other half is out. Should it slip out easily, you will have to get your door seals checked by a professional refrigerator service such as GS Refrigeration.
Keeping the coils clean.
When the condenser coils are covered in dust, your refrigerator will not work efficiently. Twice a year pull it off the wall to reveal the coils, remember to unplug your refrigerator before you vacuum them with your brush attachment.
Setting the correct temperature.
Make sure you keep your fridge between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and your freezer section at 0 degrees.
Filling it up.
Refrigerators do need what is called thermal mass, meaning lots of stuff in order to maintain its low temperatures. Cool foods and drinks will help to absorb the warm air which comes in when you open the door. So if you are the eat-out type or your fridge is just too big for your needs, try storing some jugs of water inside.
Be prepared.
When the power goes out, make sure you keep the doors closed and use food from the pantry. An unopened refrigerator can keep food safe for 4 hours; a freezer will maintain its temperature for at least 48 hours when full and 24 hours when it is half-full.
